Headset & Phone Compatibility Guide

Choosing the right headset means matching it to your phone system. This guide helps you pick gear that "just works" with your platform.

I use a softphone (computer-based calling)

If your team uses Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Webex, RingCentral, 8x8, Dialpad, or any other softphone, you need a USB or Bluetooth headset.

Best options:

•       USB-A or USB-C wired - Jabra Evolve2 30, Poly Blackwire 3220

•       Wireless Bluetooth - Jabra Evolve2 65, Poly Voyager Focus 2

•       Wireless DECT - Jabra Engage 75, Poly Savi 8200 series

Look for "Microsoft Teams Certified" or "Zoom Certified" labels for guaranteed compatibility.

I use a desk phone (Cisco, Yealink, Avaya, Mitel, etc.)

Desk phones typically use a QD (Quick Disconnect) or RJ9/RJ11 connection. You'll need:

•       A wired headset with QD bottom cable

•       OR a wireless DECT headset with the right base

•       OR a USB headset if your phone has a USB port (newer models)

Check your phone:

•       Cisco IP phones - most accept any QD headset with a Cisco-compatible bottom cable

•       Yealink phones - look for headset jack (RJ9 or USB)

•       Avaya phones - many use proprietary connections; check the model

•       Mitel phones - usually take standard QD or RJ9

I want a wireless headset for a desk phone

You'll need a DECT wireless system - typically a base station that connects to your phone, with a wireless headset that pairs to it. Popular options:

•       Jabra Engage 75 - mono/stereo, up to 150m range, multi-device pairing

•       Poly Savi 8200 series - excellent range, replaceable battery

Many DECT systems also need an EHS (Electronic Hook Switch) cable to remotely answer calls from the headset. Check your phone model.

I use multiple devices (deskphone + computer)

Get a multi-connectivity headset that pairs with both. Options like the Jabra Engage 75 or Poly Voyager Focus 2 can switch between devices on the fly.

Common confusion: Jabra Engage vs Evolve

•       Jabra Engage = built for high-volume call centres (ultra-noise cancelling, long battery, durable)

•       Jabra Evolve = built for office/UC use (Microsoft Teams certified, lighter, sleeker)

Both are excellent - choose based on your environment. Heavy call volumes? Engage. Office/hybrid work? Evolve.
